History
Gilmer County was created by an act of the Virginia General
Assembly on February 3, 1845 from parts of Lewis and Kanawha
counties. It was named in honor of Thomas Walker Gilmer
(1802-1844). The county has rich Civil War history, as well as
deep roots in the Little Kanawha River, Oil and Gas, and is home
to long-standing Glenville State College.
-
Historic Landmarks
Gilmer County is home to ten nationally registered historic
landmarks. Each landmark is easily accessible by car, and a visit
to each one makes a nice, day-long driving tour that begins
in and around Glenville, and ends nearby Cedar Creek State
Park.
-
Museums
The Holt House History Center stands along Main Street and
includes pieces reflective of simple living along the river.
The Old County Store, home of the WV Folk Festival, is just
a few blocks away.
-
Memorials to honor and remember
Gilmer County's memorials honor veterans, GSC college
presidents and their wives, athletes, and others. In
addition to the large statue on the Court House lawn,
several memorials on campus celebrate Gilmer County's
history and those who made history.

The
West Virginia Room
The West Virginia Room at GSC's Robert F. Kidd Library is
the perfect resource for Gilmer County history buffs. With
memorials to local politicians, books by local authors, and
special antiques, the room is filled with special historical
treats.
