Gilmer Memorials

With stone, statues, flowers and signs, Gilmer County remembers our history. Our region has significance for Appalachian development, Civil War history, early education, athletic, and even rose gardening.

Courthouse Memorial

Dedicated to all men and women who served in the Armed Forces in time of War, the memorial is located on the Calhoun County Courthouse lawn, surrounded by waving American flags.

GSC's World War II Memorial

WWII Memorial

Dedicated in September 1995, the World War II Memorial includes the names of 23 Glenville State College students who died during World War II. Above the engraved names of the memorial, the flag flies both night and day to remind all who pass of the 22 men and one woman who lost their lives in the war.

The President's Wall

Along the front sidewalk of the Glenville State College President's Home stands the commemorative President's Wall, a tribute to former presidents of the college. Bronze and brass plaques honoring each president grace the front, while the back lists the names of honored donors.

One-Room School
Teacher Memorial

Located in Cedar Creek State Park, this memorial stands as a testimonial of the early years of education in WV history. Near the memorial is a reconstructed one-room schoolhouse, complete with desks, inkwells and a potbellied stove.

Dora Heflin Rose Garden

Dora Heflin Rose Garden

This rose garden was built in honor of four former first ladies at Glenville State College. Named after former First Lady Dora Heflin, whose husband, Dr. Harry Heflin, was President of the college between 1947 and 1964, the circular garden has a circumference of 56 feet, 8,000 bricks and 1,700 concrete blocks. A four-tier fountain with cascading water and a pool occupies its center.

Curtis Elam Hall of Fame

Curtis Elam
Athletic Hall of Fame

In May 2001, Glenville State College established the Curtis Elam Athletic Hall of Fame. That fall, 15 members were inducted and a new tradition was born. Located in the College's athletic building, the Hall of Fame provides both recognition and inspiration.

Signs throughout the region mark significant historical locations. For example, at the top of college campus hill once stood Fort Moore, a 30 x 30 foot log fort built in 1864. It was occupied eight months, then later burned to the ground by Confederate soldiers.
